The Peter I Island Expedition team is pleased to announce the official signing of contracts for our upcoming Peter I Island Expedition in January 2027. Following the historic 2006 DXpedition to Peter I Island, the MV DAP Mares will once again carry a radio team back to the island 21 years later. The expedition—comprising an 11-man radio team, a 4-man support team, the vessel, and two helicopters—will depart from Chile on January 22, 2027. We plan to stay 3 weeks around the island with 2 weeks of onshore operation.
To ensure safety and lead the Expedition, we have contracted an experienced support team specializing in remote-area logistics and glacier operations. Notably, two of our external Norwegian expedition leaders hold the highest possible certifications in mountaineering, glacier and avalanche safety. We are also collaborating with EYOS, a premier logistics company that has supported more than 850 expeditions to Antarctica and coordinates multiple seasonal projects alongside DAP.
We are pleased to announce we will use FLEX Aurora M models and ICOM radios on the island, the same radios used for our successful Bouvet operation. We plan to install 6 radio stations and will be running 500 to 1500W with high power dedicated amplifiers for lowband. We will use a combination of 4-5 element yagis for the higher bands, and single verticals for lowband. For the 160m operation we are pleased to see the Topband Express, while the sister version will be used on 80m.
This week the team will be finalizing the packing of the expedition container in Texas. During the last few months the team has received the container from our Bouvet operation, we have cleaned, repaired and replaced items to be ready for Peter I Island. The container will be shipped from Texas to Chile in 2 weeks’ time.
With the contracts signed and the container packed we are determined to make an attempt at Peter I Island, a Norwegian dependency in the Bellinghausen Sea. Notorious for its weather conditions, this remote island is one of the most difficult ones to activate. Peter I is currently ranked #7 on the most wanted DXCC list on Clublog. The team received the Landing permit from Norwegian Polar Institute in 2024 for an amateur radio expedition to Peter I Island with DAP vessel and helicopters.
The permit is in the process of being updated.
